After leaving a successful career at American Management Systems, Ken Fang created Custom Software Service, LLC. With a passion for innovative solutions and customer service, CSS quickly became one of the fastest growing small businesses in the country.
CSS developed the first web-based scientific coding systems for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This platform was developed to adapt to the NIH’s new centralized grants management system and was used to report to congress on the amount of funding spent for a wide range of scientific categories.
After much consideration and growth, we decided to change the name of the company. Altum means “to nourish” and “to grow” in Latin. Altum was quickly earning a reputation for high-quality work in the grants management space which would drive our direction for years to come.
Altum earned a spot on the Deloitte and Touche Technology Fast 50 list in the Virginia Region, a ranking of the 50 fastest growing technology companies in the area. Ranking were based on the percentage of growth from 1998-2002.

Altum acquired Easygrants from the Arlington Group. Altum became one of the leaders in the enterprise grants management space with the Easygrants platform. Known for its highly configurable workflow and task management engine, Easygrants was the platform of choice for large organizations in North America and Europe.
Altum acquired Proposal Central from Research and Management Systems, one of the early pioneers in the grants management research space. Proposal Central was doing cloud before cloud was cool. Developed from the ground up to be multi-tenant and cloud-based, Proposal Central helped migrate the industry to electronic grant making.
Ken Fang earned a spot on the Washington Business Journal’s Minority Business Leader Award list. This award celebrated the region’s diversity by honoring some of its most inspiring leaders. The honorees were selected based on their accomplishments, challenges and their stories.
The Deloitte Technology Fast 500 was the pre-eminent technology awards program in North America. Technology Fast 500 award winners were selected based on percentage fiscal year revenue growth during the period from 2006 to 2010. Altum was given the opportunity to ring the Nasdaq closing bell as part of the award celebration.

Altum, Inc. won the Mass Mutual Citizenship Award for the best partnership between a corporation and a nonprofit organization. In this case it was for Altum’s partnership with Helping Hungry Kids (HHK), a nonprofit that provides weekend backpacks of food for kids in need. 2019 celebrates Altum’s 10th year of working with HHK.
Altum, Inc. acquired the PhilanTrack grants management solution for grant makers and grant seekers from PhilanTech. This innovative platform provided an affordable cloud-based solution for nonprofits. PhilanTrack was one of the first platforms to streamline the grants management process for grant seekers.

The Health Research Alliance (HRA) announced the launch of its ORCID consortium. For technical leadership, the HRA consortium selected Altum to provide outreach and technical support in accordance with ORCID’s Collect and Connect guidelines.

As Altum has evolved into one of the fastest-growing grants management software companies in the country, we have kept our feet firmly planted in the community. After all, what good is success if it can’t be shared?
Our community involvement began with Helping Hungry Kids, a local organization that provides bags of food for elementary students to take home on Fridays to supplement their inadequate weekend meals. Every week, our team gathered in a conference room, set up an assembly line, and happily packed nutritious, child-friendly foods.
Altum regularly contributes and supports the fundraising efforts of our customers. At Relay For Life events, no one faces cancer alone. The American Cancer Society organizes more than 2,500 Relay events around the country to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers. Altum was a proud sponsor and participant in the 2019 Relay for Life.
Lowcountry Bald is raising money for childhood cancer research with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation – the largest private funder for childhood cancer research. Their head-shaving approach to fundraising is unique: volunteers (“shavees”) raise money by agreeing to have their heads shaved bald at a public event to stand in solidarity with children that lose their hair during cancer treatment.
